Xbox 360 PS3 And Wii The Three Gaming Heavy Weights

In some ways, the Sony Playstation 3 is to Microsoft's Xbox 360 what the Xbox itself is to the Nintendo Wii: just like how the Xbox offers non-game specific capabilities when compared to the Wii's almost totally game-centric features, so too does the PS3, when compared against the Xbox which offer abilities that aren't associate with what has been traditionally associated with a game console. But the Wii is really another category of game console altogether, aiming as it does at a broad general audience, whereas the PS3 and Xbox 360 are targeted much more squarely at the people who generally play a lot of video games. They consider themselves to be hardcore players.

The first thing anyone thinks about is the hardware, though of course it's really software that makes for a gaming console. However, hardware numbers are what the male action gaming crowd is interested in. As it is the hardware that determines software capabilities. And in this regard, many people will find that the three consoles are about equal. The Xbox 360 features games which run on a unique engine. The PS3's features an "emotion engine" which is used realistically render facial gestures. The Wii's is known for having games with expert art direction. There are those, however, who believe they can detect clear differences when it comes to platform-exclusive content.

So it is the range of software offerings that must be considered, then, in trying to discern a distinction between the three. Yet here as well the PS3, Wii, and 360 tie with one another, arguably: all three offer exclusive titles that are popular, all offer the same range of action game play as each other. They all have their coterie of die-hard advocates. It's a safe bet few would turn down any of the three consoles if it were received as a gift.

The main distinctions, then, lie in two aspects: online services and extra features. Microsoft offers a varied online experience. Sony's online service is similar to what Microsoft is offering. The Wii also offers a capable online experience allowing users to browse the web and download games. Of some possible ancillary interest are the non-gaming features of the PS3, namely Blu-Ray DVD viewing, Wi-Fi internet access, and Bluetooth wireless capabilities. The Xbox 360 offers Netflix on-demand movies. The Wii is able to play GameCube games and all other Nintendo games.

Finally, pricing many fans don't take the price into consideration. As with most electronics many fans simply own all three consoles. The PS3 costs more but delivers more non-gaming capabilities. The Xbox 360 has NetFlix available. The Wii is backwards compatible. All three focus exclusively on gaming and all three come with exclusive features.

The choice basically comes down to which exclusive software titles you care about the most (Wii has the Mario series, Xbox has the Halo series, and the PS3 has Assassins Creed) and, possibly, what else you find entertaining besides gaming though. As stated earlier many video games don't want to choose one and simply purchased all three consoles.
